Postdoc Academy

Mentoring scheme for postdocs

Our winter mentoring call has now closed, and mentor/mentee pairs have been matched. If you would like to be notified when our next programme call goes live, please complete this brief register of interest.

Our popular and successful mentoring scheme offers individualised formal matching between a mentee (postdoc) and a mentor. Mentors come from academia, business and industry but could also come from governance, administration and charities if requested.

Academic mentors are drawn from outside the postdoc’s research department or institution to allow for complete openness in meetings.

Our scheme focuses on developmental mentoring, where a postdoc and their mentor work together and create solutions and action plans for successful career progression and personal development.

Successful mentoring can lead to increased productivity, career satisfaction and greater reported self-efficacy in the mentee.

Participation in such a scheme can be particularly useful for women and minority groups as it has been shown to reduce disparities with other academic members.

  • Both mentors and mentees receive training in developmental mentoring and to set expectations for the programme.
  • Postdocs are individually matched with an academic working in a related but different research area or with a mentor from outside academia.
  • Mentors and postdocs meet 4-6 times over a one year period.
  • The meetings and their contents are driven by the postdoc.
  • All meetings are confidential.

Time commitment:

  • Both postdocs and mentors are required to attend a 1 hour training session.
  • Meetings between postdocs and mentors last 30–60 minutes each.

  • Any postdoc working at Cambridge University, the Colleges and University Partner Institutions.

For potential mentors

We are always looking to expand our pool of potential mentors to meet the development needs of the ever-growing postdoc population.

There is always a high demand for academic mentors, but we also receive applications from postdocs who are interested in learning about other job sectors from individuals who have direct experience.

If you would like to mentor a University of Cambridge postdoc, please complete this form, and we will include you in our next mentoring call.
